The Fault in Our Stars

Why I would teach this book:
Not only does John Green have a talent for making his stream of conciousness writing style perfectly suited to a teenage girl coping with Cancer, the novel is also a raw view of how life is hard but also beautiful. Teens will really be able to connect to almost every character in this novel and it has a great message.
Grade Level 10-12 Note: There is mention of sex but it is handled very gently and only in passing. John Green John Green has written a number of other young adult fiction books including: Paper Towns Looking For Alaska An Abundance of Katherines Crash Course Furthermore, In my PSII practicum I taught humanities and Hank and John Green have a number of vlogs on youtube that are very useul in the classroom. I for one used his Crash Course: World History videos to introduce the Renaissance as well as his video on the Seven Years War and the American Revolution. Kids love them! Hank, his brother, has videos geared to science. Check them out over here <---------------------- |

How I would use this book?
This book would be a wonderful addition to any classroom but especially in a Humanities classroom to intertwine the history and the ELA outcomes as well.
I would do a project where the kids could be historical detectives and discover the accuracies and inaccuracies of the novel. They could do a creative writing assignment where they wrote a story about one of the historical events taught in class but written in an alternative history.
