In my PSII Practicum I learned that building a classroom community of active learners who support and care for each other is the key to having a successful class where learning thrives. Getting to know your students and having them get to know you is key to eliminating classroom management issues and connecting with your kids. Here are a few helpful resources and tips I have learned along the way.
SPOTLIGHT!
Have kids pull names and give each student a chance to stand with their back to the SMARTboard and have the other students write positive affirmations around them. Confidence booster and SO much fun.

Tip #1
Share your interests! Kids WANT to know you. Tip #2 If you teach Middle School and you like video games, bring in video game clips that relate to course material. Your students will love how you relate to them. Tip #3 Try not to alienate any student. Try to find commonalities between yourself and every student. Tip #4 Foster positive reinforcement and encourage random acts of kindness. Give SPOTLIGHT a try! Tip #5 Don't be afraid to put content aside for a lesson...or even for a week of lessons, just to build classroom community. It will make the rest of your time in that class 10x easier and more fun! |
